This is the last step in the editing process, a final polish to remove any distractions for your reader before your work goes to print or screen. I offer proofreading services for both Fiction and Non-Fiction.
This thorough look includes, but is not limited to:
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Typos
- Capitalisation
- Formatting (paragraph spacing, indention, chapter drops, widows and orphans)
- Clarity
- Consistency.
I can proofread using the following formats:
- Track Changes in Microsoft Word
- Adobe Acrobat Reader commenting tools for PDF mark-up
- On paper using BSI proof-correction symbols.
This is not to be confused with copyediting. Copyediting happens on raw or draft text. Copyeditors not only look for errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar, but also check things such as facts, potential legal issues, if the language is appropriate for the intended reader and if all the elements are clearly tagged for the typesetter. Proofreading usually happens in the final layout, looking at spelling, punctuation and grammar, ensuring all formatting is correct, while at the same time checking that all the corrections from the copyeditor have been implemented. More details can be found in my Resources.
