Helping authors turn early drafts into compelling narratives, built on strong characters and story craft.

Opening Chapters Analysis

A great starting point for those new to developmental editing, this mini-edit (up to 10,000 words) helps identify key issues early in your manuscript. Common areas I assess include:

  • Opening Strength – Does the manuscript start in the right place? Too fast or slow?
  • Engagement – Is the hook compelling? Does the POV enhance the story?
  • Character Depth – Are the protagonist and antagonist well-developed?
  • Conflict & Genre – Is there enough tension? Are the genre expectations clear?
  • Story Balance – Does the narrative blend action, theme, and setting effectively?
